Following his retirement, sports pundit Skip Bayless has sparked debate by suggesting that Westbrook chose to retire early to protect his career statistical averages. Bayless argued that Westbrook declined roles with the Washington Wizards and the Sacramento Kings—the latter of which intended for him to play fewer minutes to mentor rookie Darius Acuff—to prevent his career numbers from declining further.
