Russia accelerates Rassvet satellite network deployment
Russia is accelerating the deployment of its Rassvet satellite internet system, a low Earth orbit constellation designed to provide high-speed broadband connectivity. According to Ukrainian military intelligence, the rollout is proceeding significantly faster than originally anticipated. Currently, the system consists of 16 satellites, providing only intermittent coverage over Ukrainian territory.
Russia aims to expand this network to approximately 292 satellites by 2027 and reach a total of 924 satellites by 2035. Developed by the Russian firm Bureau 1440, the system is viewed as a strategic response to SpaceX’s Starlink, which has provided a critical communication and drone-operation advantage to Ukraine. Ukrainian officials warn that a full constellation could be used for military purposes, including drone command and control.
In addition to satellite developments, intelligence reports indicate Russia has exceeded its 2026 missile production targets for Zircon and Oniks missiles by 10% to 20% within the first seven months of the year. The Russian stockpile of Iskander-M ballistic missiles is estimated at 130 units, with 65 new missiles reportedly produced in July.
