Russia accuses NATO of militarizing the Arctic

Russia's Ministry of Foreign Affairs has accused NATO of militarizing the Arctic region and preparing offensive operations against Russian territory through continuous strategic maneuvers. Vladislav Maslennikov, head of European Affairs at the Russian Foreign Ministry, stated that the alliance is simulating geopolitical confrontations under the guise of defensive containment.

Recent military activities cited include the Arctic Edge exercises involving the United States, Canada, and Denmark, as well as the Cold Response maneuvers which mobilized 25,000 soldiers from 14 nations. Additionally, the Russian Ministry highlighted the implementation of the Arctic Sentry mission, which began in February. Moscow claims these actions, involving non-Arctic nations such as the United Kingdom, Germany, the Netherlands, and France, aim to transform the region into a permanent zone of conflict.

Further planned activities include naval missions focused on nuclear deterrence and the deployment of unmanned technologies in the North Atlantic. Russian officials warn that these increased patrols and the deployment of F-35 and Eurofighter jets in Nordic bases threaten international peace and disrupt the established strategic balance and cooperation among the eight Arctic nations.
