Russia accuses Ukraine of increased attacks near Zaporizhzhia nuclear plant

Russia has accused Ukraine of intensifying attacks on the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant and the nearby city of Energodar. Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova claimed that Ukrainian forces are attempting to destabilize the facility's operations and intimidate its staff by targeting civilian objects, including an art school and a fire station.

These allegations have not been independently verified. While the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) previously confirmed drone attacks in the vicinity, it has not identified the responsible party. The IAEA has warned that military activities near the plant pose a serious risk to nuclear safety.

The Zaporizhzhia plant, Europe's largest, has been under Russian control since March 2022. Although its six reactors are not currently producing electricity, the facility relies on external power for essential cooling systems and safety equipment. IAEA Director Rafael Grossi has called for restraint from both sides to prevent a potential nuclear accident.
