Russia advances bumblebee‑inspired micro‑drone technology

Russian researchers have created an algorithm that stabilises miniature flapping‑wing robots by adjusting wingbeat amplitude, trajectory position and wing‑angle. In wind‑tunnel tests the system kept a virtual bumblebee steady against vertical gusts up to 1.5 times its weight, recovering balance within three to six seconds. The technology, described in the journal *Communications in Nonlinear Science and Numerical Simulation*, could be used for pollinating greenhouse crops, navigating debris after disasters, reconnaissance in confined spaces and monitoring infrastructure. Lead scientist Nikolai Efanov of the Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology said a prototype could be built in about six months if commercial interest materialises. Chinese developers have a similar device but still face stability problems. Experts note that a lightweight, compact power source remains the main obstacle, as current batteries are too heavy for practical deployment.
