Russia and China deepen strategic partnership and resume talks on Siberia 2 gas pipeline

Russian President Vladimir Putin visited Beijing and met with Chinese President Xi Jinping, where the two leaders hailed a new phase of their strategic partnership. They signed more than 20 bilateral agreements covering trade, technology, artificial intelligence and wildlife protection, and renewed a comprehensive friendship treaty that underpins political, economic and defence cooperation.

Both sides also revived discussions on the long‑delayed Power of Siberia 2 gas pipeline, which would transport up to 50 billion cubic metres of Russian gas to China each year via Mongolia, supplying roughly 12 % of China’s projected gas demand by 2025. While no final deal was reached, officials said a “principled agreement” had been achieved, easing previous disputes over pricing and project timelines. The renewed energy link is viewed as vital for Russia’s economy under Western sanctions and for China’s energy security.

The joint statement also criticised the United States and Israel over recent attacks on Iran and urged a multipolar global order. The meeting came shortly after a U.S. presidential visit to China, highlighting Beijing’s effort to position itself as a key stabilising force in global diplomacy.
