Russia and EU exchange accusations over Ukraine and hybrid warfare
Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov has accused the European Union of seeking a pause in hostilities in Ukraine solely to replenish the country with weapons and sustain the current administration. Lavrov claimed that European leaders intend to use breaks in fighting to mobilize international forces and prevent the Russian administration from securing territories where Russian-speaking populations reside.
Simultaneously, the European Parliament is calling for increased defenses against hybrid warfare and political interference. Following reports of drone attacks near Poland and alleged airspace violations in Lithuania, EU officials are emphasizing the need to protect democratic institutions and elections from disinformation campaigns.
EU Commissioner Michael McGrath and MEP Tomas Tobé highlighted that malicious foreign actors, specifically naming Russia, China, Iran, and North Korea, are utilizing social media to destabilize European societies. The Parliament is advocating for the strengthening of the European Democracy Shield to identify and neutralize these threats.
