Russia and Iran advance gas pipeline and nuclear energy deals

Russia and Iran are expanding their energy and nuclear cooperation through two major initiatives. First, officials have reported significant progress on a land-based natural gas pipeline project. Iran’s ambassador to Russia, Kazem Jalali, stated that talks with Gazprom have moved beyond the early stages, with an agreed route that would transport gas through Azerbaijan into the Iranian city of Astara. The discussed capacity is approximately 150 million cubic meters per day, or roughly 55 billion cubic meters per year.

In a separate development, the two nations have signed a $25 billion memorandum of understanding to develop nuclear energy. Under this agreement, Russia’s state nuclear corporation, Rosatom, will cooperate with Iran’s private sector to construct the Hormoz Nuclear Power Plant in the Hormozgan province. The facility is planned to consist of four power units with a total capacity of 5,000 megawatts and is expected to be commissioned by 2031.

These agreements come amid heightened geopolitical tensions and economic pressure on Iran. The energy projects represent a strategic effort to increase Iranian resilience through diversified infrastructure and strengthened ties with Moscow.
