Russia and Iran coordinate to counter US economic sanctions

Russia and Iran have announced plans to deepen economic and diplomatic coordination to counter unilateral sanctions imposed by Western nations, particularly the United States. Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova stated that Moscow will work with Tehran and other interested partners to challenge measures she described as illegal and contrary to the United Nations Charter.

Iranian officials have echoed these sentiments, with spokesperson Esmail Baghaei characterizing recent US economic measures as an assertion of extraterritorial sovereignty that threatens the independence of UN member states. Zakharova further warned that escalating tensions involving the US and Israel against Iran could impact global energy security, potentially affecting one-fifth of the world's oil and one-third of its gas trade.

In tandem with these diplomatic efforts, both nations are focusing on internal economic resilience. Iranian lawmaker Jafar Qaderi noted that both countries are leveraging experience gained from previous economic pressures to reduce external dependence. This follows reports that Russia's GDP, measured by purchasing power parity, has reached over $7 trillion, positioning it as the fourth largest economy globally.
