Russia‑North Korea bridge nears opening amid military‑corridor concerns
Russia and North Korea are close to completing a road bridge over the Tumen River that will link Khasan in Russia’s Far East with Tumangang in North Korea. The two‑lane structure is about one kilometre long, seven metres wide and has cost around $100 million, while bilateral trade in 2024 was only $34 million. The bridge was slated for a June 19 inauguration, but work on the Russian side has stalled and no new date has been set.
Both governments present the crossing as a boost for commerce and tourism, with escorted tours limited to 10,000 visitors a year from 2025 and destinations some 500 km beyond the border. Ukrainian human‑rights group Truth Hounds, cited by The Guardian, argues the bridge is designed to evade satellite monitoring and will serve as a discreet military logistics corridor, enabling the movement of North Korean troops and engineers into Russia and the transfer of Russian high‑tech military components into North Korea. About 14,000 North Korean soldiers have already fought alongside Russian forces in Ukraine’s Kursk region, with roughly 2,000 reported casualties, and President Volodymyr Zelenskyy says an additional 30,000 troops are expected.
