Russia and North Korea strengthen military alliance and mutual defense pact
Russia and North Korea have strengthened their strategic alliance, which has evolved from a political association into a significant military and geopolitical partnership. During celebrations marking the 78th anniversary of their diplomatic relations, North Korean officials described the bond between the two nations as an ‘invincible camaraderie.’
A critical turning point occurred in June 2024 with the signing of a comprehensive strategic partnership treaty. This 23-article agreement includes commitments for mutual military assistance in the event that either party faces an armed invasion. This development has shifted the focus of the Korean Peninsula's nuclear issue from traditional denuclearization efforts toward a strategy of containment and risk management.
The deepening ties between Moscow and Pyongyang have expanded the scope of regional security, linking the stability of the Korean Peninsula to European security concerns. As North Korea consolidates its nuclear status and expands its diplomatic maneuverability through its relationship with Russia, the United States is simultaneously strengthening its alliance with the Republic of Korea to manage these evolving risks.
