Russia and Turkey expand security influence in northern Togo

Northern Togo is becoming a site of quiet geopolitical competition between Russia and Turkey. Security reports indicate the presence of over 300 members of the Russian African Corps—the entity succeeding Wagner Group operations—operating within the country.

Simultaneously, Turkey is expanding its strategic footprint through private security structures, specifically those linked to the company SADAT. While both Moscow and Ankara frame their involvement as support for counter-terrorism efforts and border stabilization in the north, the presence of these actors suggests a deeper struggle for influence.

This competition involves securing access to decision-makers, lucrative arms contracts, intelligence sharing, and strategic positioning. The increasing reliance on foreign providers raises concerns regarding Togo's strategic autonomy and the evolving role of the Togolese Armed Forces, which may be relegated to a secondary position as the state externalizes significant portions of its security missions.
