Russia arrests Japanese journalist Yuki Imai on espionage charges

Russian security services (FSB) have arrested Yuki Imai, a journalist for the Japanese newspaper Hokkaido Shimbun, on Sakhalin Island. Russian authorities accuse Imai of espionage, alleging he was collecting information regarding Russian military capabilities and personnel, specifically related to mobilized soldiers in the Kuril Islands area.

Imai was transferred to Moscow, where a court has ordered his provisional detention until December 12. He faces a potential prison sentence of up to 20 years. The arrest occurred as Imai was reportedly preparing to leave the country.

The Japanese government has strongly protested the arrest, summoning the Russian ambassador to express its opposition. Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi has denied the espionage allegations, emphasizing the importance of protecting journalists. Hokkaido Shimbun issued a statement asserting its independence from government instructions and calling for the respect of press freedom.

As of mid-October, Japanese embassy officials have attempted to visit Imai at a detention center in Moscow but have been unable to secure a consular meeting.
