Russia begins construction of Lada-class submarine Maloyaroslavets
The United Shipbuilding Corporation has held a keel-laying ceremony at its Admiralty shipyards for a new Lada-class diesel-electric submarine, designated as the Maloyaroslavets (Project 677). Designed by the Rubin Design Bureau, the vessel is described by the company as the fifth ship in the series, though some internal reports suggest it may be the sixth.
The Lada-class utilizes a modernized design based on lessons learned from the Sankt-Peterburg. According to United Shipbuilding, these Project 677 submarines are among the most advanced non-nuclear submarines currently manufactured by Russia, featuring a low acoustic signature, enhanced noise protection, and a high-power sonar system intended to provide an advantage over similar foreign vessels.
