Russia begins construction of Su-75 Checkmate prototype
Russia has commenced the construction of the first prototype for the Su-75 ‘Checkmate’, a fifth-generation single-engine stealth fighter jet designed primarily for export. The state defense conglomerate Rostec announced the start of assembly for the new aircraft.
According to analyst Alexej Bogatyrew, the Su-75 is intended to be faster, more agile, and more cost-effective than competitors like the American F-35A. Reported specifications include a top speed of Mach 2, an operational altitude of 16,500 meters, a payload capacity of up to 7,400 kilograms, and a range of 2,900 to 3,000 kilometers without additional tanks. The jet is expected to feature internal weapons bays, AESA radar, and a digital cockpit.
While a definitive maiden flight date has not been set, industry estimates suggest a window between late 2026 and 2027. Russia is marketing the aircraft with a significantly lower price point, suggesting a cost of approximately $25 to $30 million per unit compared to the $82 million price tag of the F-35A.
