Russia begins sea trials for Khabarovsk nuclear submarine

The Russian nuclear-powered submarine Khabarovsk, part of Project 09851, has departed the Sevmash shipyard in Severodvinsk to begin sea trials in the White Sea. The vessel is specifically designed to carry up to six 2M39 Poseidon autonomous nuclear-powered underwater vehicles.

Unlike the Belgorod submarine, which was converted from an existing hull, the Khabarovsk was purpose-built to accommodate these large underwater drones. The submarine is estimated to be approximately 135 meters long with a displacement of about 10,000 tons. The current testing phase will evaluate propulsion, steering, diving capabilities, structural integrity, and onboard systems before the vessel is officially cleared for service. Following these trials, the submarine is expected to join the Pacific Fleet.
