Russia blocks WhatsApp and throttles Telegram

Russia's telecommunications regulator, Roskomnadzor, has significantly escalated restrictions on digital communication services. As of February 12, 2026, WhatsApp has been blocked following the removal of its domains from the national domain name system. Telegram has also faced nationwide throttling since February 10, 2026, with restrictions becoming near-total by mid-2026.

The crackdown began in August 2025 when Roskomnadzor limited voice and video calls on WhatsApp and Telegram, citing concerns over phone scams and criminal recruitment. Subsequent measures included the blocking of FaceTime in December 2025 and the mandatory pre-installation of the Russian state messenger, MAX, on all phones sold within the country.

For users attempting to maintain contact, the most reliable method currently involves using a VPN alongside WhatsApp or Telegram. Alternatively, browser-based services such as Yandex Telemost or Zoom are noted as viable alternatives that do not require the installation of specific Russian accounts or applications.
