Russia expands drone bases near NATO borders

Investigations by The Telegraph and other reports indicate that Russia is expanding or modernizing at least 10 drone bases near the borders of Belarus and Ukraine. Satellite imagery reveals the installation of 59 new launch rails, with approximately 20 being longer rails likely intended for advanced, long-range unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs).

These facilities are being established through the conversion of existing military bases and civilian airports, or by constructing new launch sites in rural areas. Some of these locations are situated within occupied Ukrainian territories. One identified facility reportedly possesses storage capacity for over 1,000 drones.

Analysts warn that these developments pose a long-term threat to NATO, as the upgraded technology could allow drones to reach deep into European territory, including cities like Warsaw. Recent variants of the Shahed-style drones, known as Geran-4 and Geran-5, are reportedly equipped with high-speed jet engines and can carry payloads of up to 90 kilograms, potentially allowing them to evade air defense systems.
