Russia challenges U.S. over South Africa's G20 exclusion
Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has challenged the United States regarding the exclusion of South Africa from the upcoming G20 summit in Miami, Florida. Speaking during the United Nations General Assembly in New York, Lavrov argued that the U.S., as the host nation, does not have the authority to unilaterally decide which existing members participate. He characterized the summit process as a notification to members rather than a discretionary invitation.
South African International Relations Minister Ronald Lamola has echoed these sentiments, stating that Pretoria considers itself entitled to participate as a founding member of the G20. Lamola noted that South Africa will not attend the U.S.-hosted meetings without a formal invitation.
The diplomatic tension coincides with reports that President Donald Trump has invited Russian President Vladimir Putin to the December summit, a move intended to facilitate engagement between world leaders. Lavrov has indicated that Russia intends to raise the issue of South Africa’s status through BRICS channels and within the G20 framework.
