Russia climate change lawsuit ruled inadmissible by ECHR

The Yukaghir people, an indigenous group in northeast Siberia with only 1,813 members remaining, face the loss of their traditional lifestyle due to unpredictable weather cycles and rapid climate change. Temperatures in Russia are rising at more than twice the global average, disrupting the natural rhythms essential for their fishing, hunting, and reindeer herding practices.

In response to these environmental shifts, activists launched the ‘Russian Climate Case’ four years ago. The lawsuit, which moved from the Russian Supreme Court to the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR), alleges that the Russian government has failed to meet its international climate obligations. However, in June, an ECHR judge ruled the case inadmissible without providing specific reasoning.
