Russia criticizes Hungary's potential energy ties with Latvia

The Russian embassy in Budapest has issued an ironic response to announcements regarding potential energy cooperation between Hungary and Latvia. This reaction follows statements from Hungarian Foreign Minister Anita Orban, who indicated that discussions regarding energy partnership were held with her Latvian counterpart, Baiba Braže.

In a statement released via Telegram, the Russian diplomatic mission suggested that if Hungary views Riga as a strategic energy partner, it should source its oil and gas from there. The embassy remarked that such cooperation would inevitably result in the supply of ‘first-class Baltic oil and natural gas — with a unique aroma of freedom and liberal democracy.’

Russia further emphasized its own readiness to engage with Budapest, noting that the bilateral energy relationship between Russia and Hungary is ‘proven and tested over time.’ The embassy maintained that Hungary is well aware of Moscow's willingness to consult on all aspects of their existing energy cooperation.
