Russia criticizes Kosovo court verdict against former KLA leaders
Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova has issued sharp criticisms regarding the recent first-instance verdict by the Kosovo Specialist Chambers against former KLA leaders. The verdict found Hashim Thaçi, Kadri Veseli, Rexhep Selimi, and Jakup Krasniqi guilty on certain counts, though they were acquitted of several other charges related to crimes against humanity.
Zakharova characterized the judicial proceedings as a political attempt to purge Kosovo of its history and described the decision as ‘delayed and suspicious.’ She accused the institutions of Kosovo of ethnic oppression against the Serbian community and alleged that the West is providing ‘tacit approval’ for what she termed ‘ethnic cleansing’ in the region.
Furthermore, Zakharova targeted Kosovo Prime Minister Albin Kurti, accusing him of ‘fanatical and uncontrolled Serbophobia.’ These statements align with Russia’s long-standing refusal to recognize Kosovo’s independence and its support for Serbia’s position in international forums. While international human rights organizations noted the trial focused on individual criminal responsibility rather than the legitimacy of the KLA, Moscow continues to frame the legal actions as politically motivated targeting of Kosovar-Albanian militants.
