Russia demands extradition of ICC President Tomoko Akane

The Prosecutor General's Office of the Russian Federation has requested the detention and extradition of International Criminal Court (ICC) President Tomoko Akane and eight other officials to Russia. The request was directed toward countries hosting the ICC headquarters, such as the Netherlands.

Russia claims that the ICC's decisions to hold Russian citizens criminally responsible violate fundamental principles and norms of international law. The Russian prosecution asserts that these actions, including the issuance of arrest warrants related to the invasion of Ukraine, were conducted without evidence and constitute illegal instructions by the court's leadership and Chief Prosecutor Karim Khan.

Russia has maintained since November 2016 that it does not intend to become a party to the Rome Statute of the ICC.
