Russia demands Japan remove US Typhon missile systems
Russia has formally demanded that Japan remove United States Typhon mid-range missile systems from its territory, specifically citing their deployment on Kyushu Island. The Russian Foreign Ministry stated that a formal protest note was sent to Tokyo on September 3, asserting that the presence of these systems poses a threat to national security and regional stability.
The Typhon system, capable of launching SM-6 and Tomahawk cruise missiles with a range of approximately 1,600 km, was brought to Kanoya Air Base in Kagoshima Prefecture in June for military exercises. While the launchers are expected to leave Kanoya in mid-October, they are slated to be stored at other US military facilities within Japan.
Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova noted that China has also expressed similar concerns regarding Japan's remilitarization. This diplomatic tension occurs amid ongoing disputes between Russia and Japan over the Kuril Islands. Russia further characterized the deterioration of bilateral relations as a result of Tokyo's anti-Russian policies.
