Russia denounces NATO's Ukraine weapons program as reckless aggression

Russia’s foreign ministry, via spokeswoman Maria Zakharova, condemned NATO’s plan to develop advanced weapons for Ukraine, calling the effort “recklessly aggressive.” She warned that companies involved could become targets of intensified Russian strikes and that the program gives Moscow additional justification to widen its target list.

NATO and Ukraine have a joint innovation programme that will receive up to €50 million in 2026 for projects such as counter‑drone defence, air‑defence systems and secure frontline communications. In addition, NATO’s Allied Command Transformation issued a €250,000 tender to boost Ukraine’s long‑range strike capabilities, aiming at “persistent airport denial” with unmanned systems and loitering munitions that could strike runways and fuel depots.

Russia views these moves as bringing the alliance closer to a direct confrontation, accusing NATO of using Ukraine as a testing ground for new military technologies and of under‑estimating the risk of escalation ahead of the upcoming NATO summit.
