Russia deploys laser defense system amid missile strikes in Ukraine

Russia has released footage purportedly showing the combat use of a new laser-based air defense system designed to intercept drones. The footage depicts an intense light targeting unmanned aerial vehicles, causing them to lose flight capability. Russian sources claim these systems are already deployed in the southwest of the country to protect strategic industrial sites and other infrastructure from Ukrainian attacks.

The laser system reportedly works by using radar to track a target, followed by precision optical sensors. The beam is then directed at a small area of the drone to cause physical damage, such as piercing the hull, damaging electronics, or igniting fuel. The time required to neutralize a target varies from a few seconds to one minute depending on the drone type and distance.

Simultaneously, Russian missile and drone strikes hit several regions in Ukraine, including Kyiv, Kharkiv, Sumy, Zaporizhzhia, and the Odesa region. In Boryspil, east of Kyiv, a strike on an industrial facility and a residential building left three people dead and five injured. Ukrainian officials noted that Russia is increasingly utilizing high-speed ballistic missiles, which are difficult to intercept, amid reports that Ukraine lacks sufficient interceptor missiles for its Patriot defense systems.
