Russia deploys Sokol-I hand-launched drone interceptor
Russian military units are deploying the Sokol-I, a simplified drone interceptor designed to target Ukrainian reconnaissance and strike UAVs near the front lines. The device is characterized by its low cost and ease of production, utilizing a polystyrene foam fuselage, arrow wings, and a pusher propeller.
Unlike traditional interceptors, the Sokol-I is hand-launched by soldiers without the need for catapults or launch ramps. It is operated manually via a camera, similar to an FPV drone, and is designed to strike targets from the rear, specifically aiming for the motor. The interceptor can reach cruise speeds of 135–140 km/h, allowing it to engage slower targets at altitudes ranging from 50 m to 2,800 m.
By prioritizing simplicity and mass production over expensive sensors and autonomous functions, Russian forces aim to degrade Ukrainian aerial spotting and artillery adjustment capabilities. Reports indicate that some crews are successfully destroying multiple UAVs per day using this method.
