Russia detains cargo ship Västerbotten in the Gulf of Finland
Russian border guards detained the Cyprus-flagged cargo ship Västerbotten in the Gulf of Finland on Thursday. The vessel, operated by the German company Navalis Shipping, was en route from the port of Mönsterås in Sweden to the Estonian Port of Sillamäe.
The ship was ordered to stop after entering Russian territorial waters, where it remained at anchor for several hours for inspections and checks. While the vessel was eventually permitted to resume its journey and reached Sillamäe later that evening, Russian authorities have not provided an official explanation for the detention.
Estonian officials noted that while the incident was unpleasant, it is not unusual. The Estonian Transport Administration has since rerouted ships traveling to and from Sillamäe through Estonian waters to avoid similar encounters with Russian authorities.
