Russia develops Kh-BD cruise missile with 6,500 km range

Russia is developing a new long-range cruise missile, designated as the Kh-BD or ‘Izdeliye 506’, which reportedly has a declared range of 6,500 kilometers. According to an analysis by Sidharth Kaushal for the Royal United Services Institute (RUSI), this weapon is intended to bolster Russia’s strategic aviation capabilities, specifically for use by Tu-95MS and Tu-160M bombers.

The development of the Kh-BD appears to be a response to delays in the PAK DA strategic bomber project, which was intended to replace Russia's aging bomber fleet. Because the Kh-BD is larger than the existing Kh-101 missile, the Tu-95MS and Tu-160M aircraft will require technical modifications to carry it.

The missile's extended range could allow Russian bombers to strike targets from significant distances, potentially including targets within the United States, while remaining outside the reach of certain American air defense systems. One potential launch location identified is Alexandra Land in the Russian Arctic. However, analysts note that the missile's actual ability to penetrate advanced air defenses will depend on flight routes, launch conditions, and enemy defensive capabilities.
