Russia develops PD-8 engine following Superjet technical issues

The development of Russia's PD-8 engine was driven by technical and operational challenges encountered with the French-made SaM146 engine used in Superjet aircraft. Aviation expert Roman Gusarov noted that these issues, particularly regarding the reliability and maintenance of heat-resistant components, existed long before Western sanctions were imposed.

According to Gusarov, Russian manufacturers faced significant difficulties with the SaM146 due to frequent component failures and time-consuming repairs, which increased maintenance costs and impacted aircraft availability. Despite efforts to reach an agreement with French partners for necessary improvements, no consensus was reached. Consequently, the PD-8 project was initiated as a response to these practical technical challenges, and Superjet aircraft have now transitioned to using the Russian-made PD-8 engine.
