Russian emigration surges amid fears of new military mobilization
Russian citizens are increasingly seeking ways to emigrate from the country due to growing fears of a new wave of military mobilization. Human rights organizations, including Kovcheg, Ark, and the Relocats project, have reported a significant surge in requests for legal aid and relocation advice.
Kovcheg noted that in the first 20 days of August, inquiries via their Telegram bot increased 6.3 times compared to the entire month of May. Similarly, the Relocats project reported that daily requests for moving abroad rose from approximately 70 to 120 since July.
Popular destinations for those fleeing include Serbia, Armenia, and Georgia, largely because these countries offer visa-free access and have established support networks for Russians. Conversely, interest in Kazakhstan and Montenegro has declined due to stricter residency rules and increased costs.
Evidence of this trend is visible at border crossings; the Verkhny Lars checkpoint toward Georgia has seen daily traffic exceeding 20,000 people. Additionally, job portals like HeadHunter have seen a spike in postings for military commissions, which many Russians interpret as a sign of impending recruitment efforts.
