Russia enacts law to restrict rights of citizens living abroad
President Vladimir Putin has signed a new law designed to exert control over Russian citizens living abroad who are accused of evading legal punishment. The legislation, which was passed unanimously by the State Duma, allows the Russian state to impose restrictive measures on individuals even while they are outside the country.
Under the new regulations, targeted individuals may face the loss of essential rights, including the inability to use bank accounts or sell real estate and vehicles. Furthermore, the law enables consulates to deny the issuance of passports or other legal powers of attorney.
