Russia evaluates resuming direct flights to Cuba

Russia is considering the resumption of direct flights to Cuba, according to Alexandr Schetinin, the director of the Department for Latin America at the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The reactivation of these air routes remains a priority on the bilateral agenda, but officials state that its implementation depends on restoring necessary technical and logistical conditions in Cuba.

The current suspension of direct flights is attributed to a severe shortage of Jet A-1 aviation fuel. This shortage has been linked to economic and energy sanctions imposed by the United States, which have impacted Cuba's ability to import hydrocarbons. The lack of fuel has affected various sectors, including transportation, food production, healthcare, and education, while also impacting the tourism industry.

Data indicates that Cuba's international visitor numbers saw a significant decline in the first quarter of the year compared to the previous year. The fuel crisis has forced the temporary suspension of routes from key markets, including Russia and Canada.
