Russia expands Alabuga-Volokno carbon fiber plant to boost drone production
Russia is expanding the Alabuga-Volokno manufacturing facility in the Alabuga Special Economic Zone, Tatarstan, to bolster its military drone production. According to internal Rosatom documents, the project aims to increase the production of aerospace-grade carbon fiber by 500 tons annually by 2029.
Carbon fiber is a critical material for constructing the lightweight yet durable airframes required for kamikaze drones, such as the Geran series. Experts, including David Albright, estimate that this increase in raw material capacity could enable the production of approximately 28,000 additional armed drones per year, representing a 78 percent increase in capacity.
Satellite imagery from May to July 2026 indicates that land clearing and foundation work have already begun at the site. Investigations also revealed a shipment of 46 tons of carbon fiber chemicals from a Chinese state-owned company, highlighting ongoing cooperation between Moscow and Beijing in the defense sector. The Alabuga-Volokno plant and its parent company, UMATEX, are currently subject to sanctions by the United States, the United Kingdom, and other Western nations.
