Russia expands military capabilities in Kaliningrad and orbital space

Satellite imagery from ICEYE reveals that Russia is significantly expanding its military and reconnaissance infrastructure in the Kaliningrad region. A massive over-the-horizon radar system is under construction near Gvardeysk, approximately 37 kilometers from the Polish border. The installation features three antenna arrays, each exceeding 500 meters in length, arranged in a star shape. This system is designed to detect aircraft and missiles at distances between 900 and 3,000 kilometers, potentially covering much of Europe, including Germany, France, and the United Kingdom.

In addition to the radar, ICEYE reports that Kaliningrad hosts more than 20 signal intelligence and electronic warfare sites. Other developments include a large circular antenna array near Chernyakhovsk and the deployment of mobile S-400 surface-to-air missile launchers near Baltiysk. Reports also suggest the potential deployment of nuclear warheads within the region.

Simultaneously, tensions have escalated in Earth's orbit. The Russian military satellite Kosmos 2612 has performed a series of precise maneuvers to approach the commercial radar satellite ICEYE-X36, which provides critical intelligence to Ukrainian forces. Experts from the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) suggest these actions may be a form of targeted intimidation, noting that Russia increasingly views commercial satellites supporting Ukraine as legitimate military targets.
