Russia expands strategic influence in Central African Republic

The Central African Republic (CAR) has become a primary site for Russian strategic expansion in Africa, evolving from simple military presence to a deep-seated influence spanning security, economy, and diplomacy.

Since the presidency of Faustin-Archange Touadéra began in 2016, bilateral cooperation has intensified. This includes the deployment of Russian paramilitary forces, often associated with the Wagner Group, to support local forces against armed groups and secure strategic zones. While this presence has contributed to relative security improvements in certain areas, it has also raised concerns regarding national sovereignty and the opacity of paramilitary methods.

Economically, Russian influence is characterized by significant involvement in the country’s extractive sectors. Agreements regarding gold and diamond mining, as well as energy resources, have shifted economic priorities. This has led to debates over whether resource wealth benefits the local population or fuels opaque financial circuits, as much of the exploitation is now shared with Russian actors.
