Russia expands UAV launch bases near Ukraine border

Investigations and satellite imagery reveal that Russia is expanding its unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) infrastructure near the borders of Ukraine and Belarus. Reports indicate the construction of at least 10 new bases designed to house and launch advanced long-range drones. Satellite data specifically shows the completion of 16 new launch rails at the Tsymbulova base in the Oryol region, which currently holds over 100 Geran-series UAVs.

These facilities utilize mechanical guide rails instead of traditional runways to launch fixed-wing drones. Some sites have been converted from civilian airports or existing military bases, with supply chains linked to facilities like the Alabuga special economic zone. The proximity of these bases to the border allows for large-scale strikes against Ukrainian targets and poses a potential long-term threat to NATO allies.

In response to Russian drone activity, Ukraine has begun deploying British-made UAVs for long-range strikes into Russian territory. This includes the Nyan model produced by BAE Systems, which has been used in attacks against regions such as Belgorod and various Russian oil refineries. While Ukraine primarily relies on domestically produced drones, the integration of British technology marks an escalation in their ability to strike deep within Russia.
