Russia explores friendly football match with USA
The Russian Football Union is exploring the possibility of organizing a friendly match against the United States national team. Maksim Mitrofanov, Secretary General of the Russian Football Union, confirmed that communications with the US federation have been ongoing and described the current atmosphere regarding such discussions as “quite positive.”
Since February 2022, Russian teams have been excluded from FIFA and UEFA competitions due to the invasion of Ukraine. While Russia has previously played matches against lower-ranked opponents, Mitrofanov noted that matches against top-ten FIFA ranked teams involve significant costs, sometimes exceeding $10 million per game.
Analysts suggest this potential sporting engagement reflects broader shifts in international relations. Some reports indicate that individuals within the US administration have expressed interest in seeing Russian athletes participate in the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.
