Russia explores rail link to India via Central Asia and Iran

Russian Deputy Prime Minister Marat Khusnullin has proposed exploring a direct railway route to the Indian Ocean to establish land-based connectivity with India. The initiative aims to provide an alternative to strategic maritime chokepoints, such as the Bosphorus and the Strait of Hormuz, which have faced increasing disruptions due to regional conflicts and geopolitical tensions.

The proposed corridor could potentially traverse Turkmenistan, Iran, Afghanistan, and Pakistan to reach India. While the plan is currently in an exploratory stage and requires significant infrastructure development and international coordination, it offers a strategic way for Russia to secure more predictable trade and energy supply chains with South Asia.

Khusnullin also noted that Russia's construction sector possesses the capacity to manage an additional one trillion rubles in annual workload, suggesting the infrastructure requirements could benefit the domestic economy if long-term financing is secured.
