Russia faces economic strain from rising food and utility costs

Russia is facing significant economic pressure as rising defense costs, increased tax burdens on businesses, and declining oil and gas revenues impact the national economy. Citizens are reporting sharp increases in the cost of living, particularly following recent parliamentary elections.

Reports indicate that food prices have surged by as much as 15 to 35 percent in some instances, while utility costs have risen by 15 to 20 percent. According to Rosstat, Russians are currently spending nearly 40 percent of their income on food, marking the worst level since 2008.

The Institute for Natural Monopoly Problems predicts that 2026 will be the first year in six years where income growth for Russians will lag behind the rising costs of utility services. While the Central Bank has described inflation as moderate in most regions for September, public sentiment and inflation expectations have continued to decline.
