Russia faces growing scrutiny over potential tactical nuclear weapon use

Concerns are mounting regarding the potential use of tactical nuclear weapons by Russia in its conflict with Ukraine. As diplomatic negotiations have largely collapsed, reports suggest that President Vladimir Putin is surveying options for escalation to counter Ukrainian strikes on Russian oil infrastructure and the supply of weapons from NATO allies.

Alexei Zhuravlev, a State Duma deputy and leader of the nationalist Rodina party, has publicly advocated for the use of tactical nuclear weapons to force a Ukrainian capitulation. Zhuravlev stated that the use of such weapons should not be a matter of debate, asserting, “If we need to strike, we will strike.”

While there is no confirmed evidence that President Putin has decided to deploy nuclear weapons, Kremlin sources indicate he is considering intensifying conventional ballistic assaults and may view tactical nuclear options as a way to gain a battlefield advantage. This rhetoric follows a visit to Moscow by CIA Director John Ratcliffe, who reportedly sought to determine if further escalation could be avoided through negotiations.
