Russia faces high military casualties amid Donbas fighting

Russia has reportedly suffered significant military losses during the ongoing invasion of Ukraine. According to Ukrainian data, Russia lost 42,860 soldiers in July alone, marking the highest monthly casualty rate since January 2025. Total Russian casualties, including those killed and wounded, are estimated to have reached approximately 1.5 million since the start of the conflict.

Fighting remains intense across a front line exceeding 1,200 kilometers. Russian forces are concentrating attacks in the Donbas region, specifically around Donetsk, Pokrovsk, and Kostyantynivka, in an attempt to advance. Meanwhile, President Zelenskyy reported that Ukraine has reclaimed 745 square kilometers and 26 settlements since the beginning of the year. Russia has also claimed the capture of 19 settlements in the southeast.

Reports indicate that Russia continues to utilize a ‘meatgrinder’ tactic, deploying waves of infantry to overwhelm Ukrainian defenses through sheer mass, despite high casualty rates. To address recruitment challenges, there are reports of Russia using false promises to attract soldiers and potentially recruiting personnel from African nations and North Korea.
