Russia faces rapid inflation and rising cost of living
Russia is experiencing significant price increases across essential goods, including flour, fuel, water, and electricity. Reports indicate that some prices have doubled in short periods, with specific food items seeing dramatic hikes. For example, flour prices in Irkutsk reportedly rose from 36–45 rubles to 84 rubles, an increase of approximately 86 percent. In northern regions where goods are flown in, cucumbers have reached prices of 1,500 rubles per kilogram.
Other notable increases include beef rising by 14 percent, fish by 22 percent, and coffee by up to 25 percent. Many citizens report that wages and pensions are failing to keep pace with these rising costs.
The social tension surrounding inflation has led to professional consequences for those speaking out. Svetlana Ischilenko, a former supermarket worker in Sochi, lost her job after posting a video on social media highlighting price increases of 18 to 33 percent. Her comment, ‘The elections are over – the prices have risen,’ has become a widely shared sentiment among Russians facing economic pressure.
