Russia faces rising costs as utility and food prices surge

Following recent elections, the Russian population is facing significant economic pressure due to rising utility costs and skyrocketing food prices. The government has implemented higher utility rates across several regions; for instance, in Kuzbass, the permitted increase was raised from 12 to 19.8 percent. Nationwide, sewage costs rose by an average of 17.1 percent in early October, while cold water and electricity saw increases of 15.3 percent and 12 percent, respectively.

These rising costs are compounded by broader economic challenges, including fuel shortages for gasoline and diesel. These shortages have impacted the agricultural sector, making it difficult to transport harvests and leading to food spoilage. Consequently, food prices have surged dramatically in certain regions. In Irkutsk, the price of flour has risen from approximately 36–45 rubles to 84 rubles, while in Pevek, prices for certain goods have reached levels equivalent to 16.25 euros per kilogram.
