Russia funeral industry expands as coffin prices surge 105%

The Russian funeral industry is experiencing rapid expansion and significant price inflation amid rising military casualties from the invasion of Ukraine. Since the start of the conflict in February 2022, the average cost of a coffin in Russia has increased by 105%, rising from 4,469 rubles to approximately 9,167 rubles by June 2026.

Price surges have coincided with key military developments, such as the September 2022 mobilization order, which saw coffin prices jump 33% in five months. Other service costs have also risen; grave-digging fees have increased by 60% since the pre-war period, reaching an average of 12,576 rubles by late 2025.

The sector's economic growth is substantial. The industry's total turnover reached 128 billion rubles last year, a more than 50% increase compared to 2021. New business activity is also accelerating, with 1,543 new funeral businesses opening in 2025 and nearly 1,000 more entering the market in the first half of 2026. This commercial boom follows reports from the Center for Strategic and International Studies estimating Russian military losses have reached significant levels, including 450,000 killed by June 2026.
