Russia-Georgia border traffic sparks mobilization speculation
Speculation regarding a potential mass mobilization in Russia has emerged following reports of record-breaking traffic at the Verkhny Lars border crossing between Russia and Georgia. While some reports suggested over 20,000 Russians crossed the checkpoint in a single day, Vasily Nebenzya, Russia’s representative to the UN, denied that any mass mobilization is planned or expected.
The Russian Customs Service attributed the high volume of movement to the end of the vacation season, noting that the statistics include both entries and exits. They stated that a larger flow of passengers is currently moving toward the Russian Federation as citizens return from holidays.
Conversely, the Georgian Ministry of Internal Affairs provided different figures, stating that 7,880 citizens crossed the border, and noted that more people entered Russia from Georgia (8,406) than vice versa. Other explanations for the congestion include recent weather-related border closures and the conclusion of the summer holiday period.
