Russia halts coal transit corridor through Krasnoje to Poland

Russian Railways (RZD) has suspended rail transit through the strategic Krasnoje crossing on the Russian-Belarusian border, disrupting coal supplies from Kazakhstan to Poland. The restriction, implemented without a stated reason, prevented the movement of cargo and empty wagons between Krasnoje and the Belarusian station of Osinovka.

Kazakhstan is a critical supplier for Poland, accounting for approximately 1.9 million tons of the 3.06 million tons of total coal imports during the first half of 2026. While some coal reaches Poland via Baltic Sea ports, the Krasnoje corridor serves as a primary land route for energy coal from Central Asia.

The Polish Chamber of Coal Sellers (PIGSW) reported that the decision was made in Moscow with only five days' notice, leaving importers little time to react. Following an initial suspension from October 8 to October 17, 2026, reports indicated further restrictions beginning October 28.

Polish Energy Minister Miłosz Motyka stated that there is currently no risk of coal shortages for the systemic energy sector. He noted that the situation is being monitored daily in coordination with relevant ministries and energy companies, adding that importers facing difficulties in Kazakhstan are seeking alternative supply directions.
