Russia imposes strict movement restrictions along Estonian border

Russia has implemented strict movement restrictions within a five-kilometer zone along its border with Estonia, specifically in the Slantsy and Kingisepp regions of the Leningrad Oblast. According to the Russian Federal Security Service (FSB), these measures—which include a nighttime curfew for pedestrians and vehicles, bans on using small boats, and restrictions on accessing riverbanks—are intended to prevent border and migration violations and protect biological water resources.

However, analysts suggest the restrictions serve a different purpose: creating a barrier to prevent Russian citizens of conscription age from fleeing the country ahead of potential mass mobilization. The measures are concentrated near the Narva River, which separates the Estonian city of Narva from the Russian town of Ivangorod, marking a sensitive frontier for both the European Union and NATO.

In response to these developments, the Estonian government is preparing for the possibility of rapidly closing border crossings. Estonian police and border guards have been placed on high alert as the geopolitical tension at this strategic crossing continues to rise.
