Vostok Oil project launches Arctic oil transport via new pipeline
Russian President Vladimir Putin has inaugurated the Vostok Oil project, a major energy initiative designed to transport large volumes of crude oil via the Arctic Northern Sea Route. The project features a 790-kilometer pipeline connecting the Vankor and Payakha Siberian oil fields to the newly constructed Sever Bay marine terminal on the Taymyr Peninsula.
Rosneft, the state-controlled oil company, manages the project, which taps into an estimated 7 billion tons of oil reserves. The initial phase of the Sever Bay terminal is expected to handle 30 million tons of oil annually, with plans to increase this capacity to 50 million tons by 2030. The full pipeline system is designed for a capacity of up to 100 million tons per year.
The initiative aims to establish the Arctic as a reliable alternative to traditional maritime routes like the Suez Canal, providing a direct link to Asia-Pacific and European markets. To support this, Russia is expanding its icebreaker fleet and aims to make the Northern Sea Route navigable year-round by 2036. The project is a central component of Russia's broader economic development strategy for Siberia and the Far East.
