Russia intensifies attacks on Ukrainian Black Sea ports

Russia has intensified military operations against Ukrainian maritime infrastructure in the Black Sea following the rejection of a proposed truce. The Russian Ministry of Defense reported strikes on terminals and vessels in the port of Odesa, claiming to have targeted merchant ships and tankers allegedly carrying military equipment and fuel. Additionally, Russian drones targeted Ukrainian patrol boats and a water drone assembly factory.

This escalation follows a significant Ukrainian operation against the Russian naval base in Novorossiysk. President Volodymyr Zelensky reported that Ukrainian strikes impacted several Russian vessels, including frigates and landing ships, while damaging oil and bulk infrastructure essential for Russian exports. Satellite imagery confirmed that two major grain terminals were forced to suspend operations due to the damage.

The Russian Foreign Ministry rejected a moratorium on Black Sea operations, which was reportedly proposed by Ukraine via Turkey. Russian spokesperson Maria Zakharova stated that Moscow sees no reason to adopt measures that would provide a temporary respite for the Kyiv regime.

The conflict continues to impact global food security. The United Nations has warned of rising wheat prices, which increased by 20% in late July. Russian grain exports have also seen significant declines, falling by 26.6% in July and continuing to drop in early August.
